Murfreesboro, Tennessee, is a historic city located in Rutherford County, Tennessee. Murfreesboro sits southeast of Downtown Nashville and is about a 45-minute drive from the city(depending on traffic). The town was founded in 1811 and is best known for its role in the American Civil War.

Murfreesboro was originally named Cannonsburgh. It was established in 1811 on a land tract donated by a Revolutionary War soldier, Colonel William Lytle, and renamed Murfreesboro after Colonel Hardy Murfree. Hardy Murfree was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Continental Army of North Carolina. In 1779, he was one of ten men chosen by General George Washington to lead the Battle of Stony Point. He's probably best known for leading his infantry to a successful attack on Stony Point, a British bastion on the Hudson River. Throughout the war, he was a valuable soldier, serving as major and then lieutenant colonel. After the war, he was active in politics and served as a judge.

The Battle of Stones River is also known as the Second Battle of Murfreesboro. The Battle of Stones River was one of the Civil War's bloodiest battles. The battle raged on from December 31, 1862 - January 2, 1863, killing over 23,000 men, one of the highest casualty rates of the war. The Union army eventually emerged victorious but at a staggering cost. Over 6,000 union soldiers were buried here. The Stones River battlefield is now a National Battlefield Park and is open to the public for tours.

The university is located on a 550-acre campus and offers bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees. MTSU is also home to the largest recording industry program in the world.
